The International HIV/AIDs CandleLight Memorial Day was celebrated with pomp and colour at HOREC, a HIV/AIDs orphans’ home in Matungulu Sub-County, Machakos County.
The event is celebrated world-wide in May. It seeks to remember all those who have died from HIV/AIDs related complications, extend a thought to people living with HIV (PLWH) and appreciate those taking care of PLWH and HIV/AIDs orphans.
The HOREC children sang, made merry and lit candles, in honour of their deceased parents and relatives and in appreciation of those taking care of them, the HIV/AIDs orphans. Each child lit their own candle and passionately sang the moving and emotional lyrics of Chris Rice’s Go Light Your World song.
Speeches from various HOREC stakeholders called on leaders and society at large to support the future of people living with HIV (PLWH). This was in line with the 2015 Candlelight Memorial Theme, “Supporting The Future”.
This special event was also marked together with the centre’s 10th Anniversary. Horec (Hope for Orphans Rescue Centre) is a home taking care of over 100 HIV/AIDs orphans under the help of donors and well-wishers.
Straight Talk Foundation Kenya through Teen Plus was a partner with Horec in the 10th anniversary and candle lighting celebrations
